CUSTOMS DECLARANTS

Customs Declarants

The declarant and the customs declarant carry out on our clients’ behalf all administrative duties and customs formalities necessary for the importation or exportation of goods. They prepare declarations in accordance with the laws and fees concerning all types of transport: land, rail, sea, river, and air.

They should not be confused with customs administration officers, who register and check the documents prepared by customs declarants and also calculate fees as established by law.

Their main tasks can be described as follows:

preparing customs declarations

  • knowledge of legal and customs regulations concerning imported or exported products: alcohol, explosives, food products, serums and vaccines, precious metals, vegetables, etc.;
  • checking documents in accordance with current legislation;
  • contacting customers to reduce the risk of incorrect declarations (in this case, customs administration may open a dispute which can involve, depending on the severity of the issue, higher or lower penalties);
  • informing customers about fare classification of goods, application and interpretation of customs legislation or other regulations;
  • performing physical inspection of goods if requested by customs officials;

preparing official documents

  • preparing customs declarations based on the goods and filling out forms for import, export, customs clearance, etc.;
  • preparing special certificates for dangerous goods, military equipment, works of art, etc. and attaching specific documents such as health certificates or import declarations;
  • providing customs with information regarding terms of sale, origin of goods (quantity, weight, destination, means of transport, etc.);
  • applying duties, fees, and charges for the goods, according to dimensions and characteristics;
  • calculating prices and making invoices.

 

Requirements:

  • Possession of federal professional certification as customs declarant (APF), or
  • federal professional certification (AFC) or certification from business school or equivalent qualification, and professional experience of at least 4 years including 3 as a customs declarant, or

other qualification with at least 7 years of professional practice in the field of customs declaration
