Import licences are generally required from Pat. 1.000 (for goods which are subject to quota regulation) and for goods including chemical and pharmaceutical products, meat, foods, wine, bicycles and passenger vehicles. There are Special Import Regulations for various goods (e.g. iron, steel, aluminium, plastic, machines and raw materials to manufacture compact discs and radio and radar devices).

Terms of payment and tenders

Irrevocable, confirmed letter of credit; invoicing in any convertible currency; CFR or CIF port of destination; tenders in Portuguese or English.

Shipping and accompanying documents

Standard and:

a) Commercial invoices, 3 copies in Portuguese or English with all standard information. At the end of the invoice, the following legally declaration, which must be signed in a legally binding way by the exporter, must be included: “Confirmamos que as mercadorias indicadas nesta factura são de origem da …”. Certified by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, no consular legalisation. Chamber of Industry and Commerce certificates of origin.

b) Certificates of origin only on request.

If desired, indicate the following as an origin for Swiss goods: “Suiza”, or “União de Europeia” for UE goods. Chamber of Industry and Commerce certificates of origin.

c) Bills of lading uncertified; order bills of lading permissible if a notify address is given.

d) Postal shipments up to a maximum weight of 20 kg, 1 international dispatch note, 1 customs declaration (English, French or national language).
