The export process step by step

Exporting goods from Switzerland requires compliance with specific customs procedures and the preparation of complete documentation. This guide takes you through every phase of the process, from goods classification to final shipment.

  1. Goods classification: Identify the correct HS code for the goods to be exported. Classification determines duties, restrictions and required documents.
  2. Restriction verification: Check whether the goods are subject to restrictions, special authorisations, embargoes or sanctions in the destination country.
  3. Commercial documentation: Prepare the commercial invoice, packing list and any certificates of conformity or quality required.
  4. Customs declaration (Passar): Complete and transmit the export customs declaration via the FOCBS Passar electronic system.
  5. Certificate of origin: If applicable, request the certificate of origin (EUR.1, Form A) to benefit from preferential tariffs in the destination country.
  6. Shipment and transport: Organise transport with the chosen carrier, prepare transport documents (CMR, AWB, B/L) and take out insurance if necessary.
